Paty, a wirrarika woman scarred by violence fights to preserve her people's self-determination and, by facing her past, turns her pain into a new way of life for her family.
Director and Cinematographer, graduated from Image and Sound department of the University of Guadalajara. In 2015 he directed his first short The language of clay. It was part of the official selection at FICG and Int. Student Film Camp’s INTERscreen program (Serbia). In 2016 the state of Jalisco’s Council for Culture and Arts as a part of their Young Creators program awarded him grants to develop his first feature documentary El viaje de Paty. He’s participated in workshops such as Berlinale Talents Guadalajara (FICG), Talent Lab (Montreal Int. Documentary Festival RIDM) and Ji.hlava Academy (Jihlava Int. Documentary Film Festival). As a Cinematographer he has worked on other fiction and non fiction narrative projects such as Amazon Prime’s documentary TV series All or nothing: Chivas. He is now preparing his second feature narrative : El año del gato, from director Juliana Orea Martínez.
Paty’s story unfolds on several layers: personal, political and family settings. A mother who fights to defend and transform the values of her community, but who sets out on her own path too, following her own voice, with the sacrifices and losses that it entails. As such, it is nuanced and complex, but—above all else—universal.
Making this film was finding my own journey around this. It made me realize how hard is for a lot of woman, specially on this kind of context to get ahead. This personal understanding process came in parallel to go along Paty’s struggle.
Creating From a family’s everyday life, their silences and absences, to also address important social and political issues. I am now a close friend of the family and also a good companion for Paty, in her Journey to achieve community gender equity.
